(James 4:7) "So submit to [the authority of] God. Resist the devil [stand firm against him] and he will flee from you. Come close to God [with a contrite heart] and He will come close to you."
Once again, there’s an obvious two-part discipline here.
We can’t just tell the devil to ‘get lost’ (and expect him to go with his forked tail between his legs), without:
- Submission to the authority of GOD.
- In a broad sense, this submission is a voluntary act of surrendering our will, desires, and self-control to GOD's authority and leading. It is acknowledging GOD's ultimate authority and recognising His plan for our life, even when it differs from personal preferences or desires. In essence, it means living in obedience to GOD's will and commands, trusting in His wisdom and timing, and rejecting selfish desires in favour of His Glory.
- Come close to GOD
- In a spiritual context, this signifies establishing a meaningful and intimate relationship with GOD, characterised by intentionality, faith, and a willingness to seek Him. This involves seeking to understand His character, following His teachings, and 'allowing' His Presence to shape our thoughts, actions, and lifestyle.
Holy Spirit, please help me to understand …
Let's pray, "Lord GOD, God, I humbly submit to Your authority. I recognise that You are the Sovereign Lord of my life and that Your will is always for my best. Help me to align my heart and mind with Your desire, and to surrender my will to Your perfect plan. I pray that I may be clothed in Your armour and that I may be strong in Your Spirit to resist the schemes and temptations of the devil." Amen!
