(Luke 15:11–32) The Parable of the Prodigal Son

This series explores how God speaks to us—even in the pain. Part 22: THE PRODIGAL — Reconciliation

So many of us have loved ones who have gone astray. I’m writing this next, difficult series from a heart that grieves alongside yours.

  1. THE FAMILY WHO STAYED: Waiting, Wounding, and Hoping

When someone leaves, the people left behind suddenly find themselves in survival mode. The first shock feels like a cold wave; shame settles heavy in the chest. Everyday pressures that once felt distant — bills, childcare, school runs, work, appointments — become relentless. Routines that used to steady you now feel fragile, and every small choice seems bigger than it should.
Alongside the practical scramble lives a raw, complicated ache. Grief and anger have moved in and share the same room: parents wiping tears in the dark, siblings holding on to slow-burning resentment, everyone replaying the moment over and over. Conversations swing between avoidance and sharp blame. Trust doesn’t snap so much as wear thin, and wounds begin to bleed the moment people touch them.
Everyone's living on the edge — hearts racing, ears tuned to every knock on the door, or ping of a text.
And yet this is not the end of the story. From the bazillion testimonies of Grace out there, when we place our hope in God, He meets the messiness with mercy. I'm not saying that it erases the pain or fast-forwards the work, but it does bring a steadying Presence in the middle of all the chaos.
Hope in God gives courage to offer tentative apologies, to welcome someone who has changed because of their absence, and (for them) to keep showing up when it would be easier to just withdraw entirely.
Forgiveness grows slowly through patient, faithful acts: shared meals, kept promises, showing up for the hard conversations, and listening more than defending.

Boundaries are redrawn with God's Wisdom, and safety is rebuilt one small, trustworthy gesture at a time. In those everyday, ordinary acts — guided by prayer, grace, and humility — God will bring unexpected good: softened hearts, renewed trust, and a new pattern of belonging stitched together by His Faithfulness.

Let’s pray, “Heavenly Father, You know the ache of the empty seat at our table. We bring our fear, shame, and hope to You—hold us steady. Give us patience, wisdom, and the courage to keep faith without forcing change. Protect us from bitterness; soften our hearts and teach us to forgive. Have mercy on our prodigal—meet them where they are, open their eyes to Your love, and lead them home. Work all things for good, restore what is broken, and stitch our family together by Your grace. We trust You to bring beauty from the ashes." Amen!
