I was talking to a guy a while ago who had more excuses for the terrible hole he was in than a dog has hairs and it got me thinking.
I was running a company of about 40+ people some 20 years ago when our main client went bust, leaving us with a humongous debt of £400k!
We tried our best to get out from under the weight of such a huge debt. We prayed we cried, we tithed, we whined, and we did everything we knew … finally, with no more cards to play, I threw myself on the Lord's mercy and He told me to “give it to Him” and “let go...”
Unfortunately, as the Managing Director, I ended up having to face a Government Insolvency Practitioner who would adjudicate whether I was personally culpable.
This was quite possibly one of the most humbling and humiliating experiences of my life. I went into the meeting armed with lots of files to show how the fault wasn’t ‘mine‘, but that one of my directors has missed this opportunity and another had missed that one… etc., etc.
After listening patiently to all my excuses, he stretched out his hand and gently closed all the files I had brought, saying: “Who was the Managing Director?” “Me," I said sheepishly, "I was,” “Then the ultimate responsibility rests with you. You should have taken more note of all that was happening around you and made better choices!”
I accepted my responsibility, and the Government Agency absolved me. It wasn’t a rap across the knuckles but a humiliating slap on the face that I’ve never forgotten.
My prayer is that none of you ever have to face anything like this, but if you do, then like Scripture says: "Trust in the Lord completely, and do not rely on your own opinions. With all your heart rely on him to guide you, and he will lead you in every decision you make." (Prov 3:5)
