(Mark 10:42) "So Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their superiors exercise authority over them. But it shall not be this way among you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be the slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

In this series, we're delving deeper into the teachings that Jesus left us to follow. The eighth commandment leads us to our next focus: SERVICE TO OTHERS ...

The opposite of service to others is self-centeredness or selfishness. This mindset prioritises our own desires, needs, and ambitions over others' well-being and needs, leading to actions that benefit oneself at the expense of others. Who's the master of this? Satan!

Specific passages throughout the Bible point to Satan's fall from Grace due to his attitude, pride and rebellion. Isaiah 14:12-15 and Ezekiel 28:12-17 are two such passages. The intimation is that satan was thrown out of heaven because he considered himself GOD's equal and therefore, in pride, he rebelled and refused to serve GOD.

In Christianity, chasing power is a significant red flag, as it breeds pride and self-centeredness, pulling individuals away from GOD's teachings. This relentless quest is seen as a grave sin, as it leads to exploitation and overshadows the call to love and serve others. Jesus perfectly counters this sin by embodying humility and service, setting us a powerful example of selflessness and love.

When Jesus talks about being "a slave of all," he decisively redirects our naturally selfish tendencies away from the destructive path which leads to death, guiding us in love toward selfless service and humility. This involves deliberately releasing all our personal ambitions into GOD's care, trusting in His perfect knowledge of our needs, and seeking Him for His perfect purpose for our lives.

Let us pray, "Heavenly FatherI come before You seeking Your guidance and strength. Help me to let go of pride and self-centeredness, which distance me from Your love and purpose. Teach me humility, that I may see the needs of others and serve them with a selfless heart. Transform my desires to align with Your will, and fill me with Your spirit of compassion and love. Thank You for Your grace and patience as I strive to follow the example of Jesus." Amen!
