(1 John 4:19) [ESV] "We love because he first loved us." [Message] "We, though, are going to love—love and be loved. First we were loved, now we love. He loved us first."
In this upcoming series, we're going to take a closer look at the teachings Jesus left us to follow. We begin by reviewing the first and most crucial element: LOVING GOD.
NB - These past series have gone nowhere without your testimonial input, and so I thank you in advance for your extremely valuable contribution.
Regardless of how the above verse is translated, it shows that we can only walk the path of Agape love because it was first made accessible to us. As such, we can only understand and express Agape love because this unique love has been poured into us through His Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5). This elevated form of love totally contrasts with our natural inclinations, being selfless and unconditional, centred on others' well-being, and transcending personal feelings and desires. Loving God encompasses several essential aspects, (not listed in any particular order).
1. Devotion: It means prioritising your relationship with GOD, dedicating the one thing we can either begrudgingly or lavishly give to the relationship - Time! Making time for Him through prayer (communication), worship (a connection to something greater than oneself), reflection (for spiritual growth, to reinforce faith, and to find encouragement, guidance, and peace) and 'attentive' listening (this is not [and should never be] a one-way relationship).
2. Faithfulness: Trusting in GOD's plan and promises - even when (especially when) circumstances are challenging. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6)
3. Following His Teachings: Adhering to the teachings and commandments found in Scripture. Loving Him means striving to live according to His will because "GOD causes all things to work for the ultimate good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose." (Romans 8:28)
4. Seeking His Guidance: This involves trusting completely in GOD's will over personal understanding by relying on the Holy Spirit. This requires a continuous, intentional effort as it affects every aspect of life. (Proverbs 3:5): "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."
5. Worship: Demonstrating love and reverence through worship involves both communal and personal devotion. In communal settings, this might include singing, prayer, and shared reflection. In personal devotion, worship can take the form of solitary prayer, meditation, or other acts that deepen one's connection to our Lord. (John 4:24): "God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth."
6. Obedience to His Will: Being willing to act according to what you believe GOD desires for your life, which will involve making choices that align with His principles and not just our perceived well-being. (Luke 22:42) “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”
7. Loving Others: Understanding that loving GOD (the vertical aspect of the Cross) naturally extends to loving others (the horizontal element), as Jesus taught, these two commands are deeply interconnected. (John 13:34) "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another".

Let us pray, Heavenly Father, I am overwhelmed by Your deep and unconditional love for me, especially recognising that Your love came first. Thank You for Your sacrifice and grace, which I know I do not deserve and please forgive me for times when I have been guarded with my love for others. I pray that Your love will be poured through me so that I can love others as You have loved me. Help me to be Your vessel, reflecting Your love in my daily life and showing compassion to those around me, whether they respond favourably or not. Strengthen my will and my faith, Lord and remind me of Your great love when I face temptation or doubt." Amen!
