A devout life does bring wealth, but it’s the rich simplicity of being yourself before God. Since we entered the world penniless and will leave it penniless, if we have bread on the table and shoes on our feet, that’s enough.

...Lust for money brings trouble and nothing but trouble. Going down that path, some lose their footing in the faith completely and live to regret it bitterly ever after. (1 Tim 6:6)

A bunch of us were discussing this subject last night - everything from the contentious prosperity gospel to the pros and cons of the obligatory 10% tithe.

The apostle Paul, in his first letter to his young disciple, Timothy, had this to say: “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs” (1 Tim 6:10).

Now, this verse is often misquoted as, “Money is the root of all evil.” Notice how “money” is substituted for “love of money” and “the root of all evil” is substituted for “a root of all kinds of evil.” These changes, while subtle, have an enormous impact on the meaning of the verse.

The Bible makes it quite clear that sin is the root of all evil in the world (Matt 15:19; Rom 5:12; Jam 1:15).

So we see that it is the love of money, not money itself, that is a source of all different kinds of trouble and evil. Wealth is morally neutral; there is nothing wrong with money, in and of itself, or the possession of money. However, it is when money begins to control us that trouble starts!

Paul clarifies all this in his earlier verses... If you have leaders there ...who refuse the solid words of our Master Jesus and this godly instruction, tag them for what they are: ignorant windbags who infect the air with germs of envy, controversy, bad-mouthing, suspicious rumours. Eventually, there’s an epidemic of backstabbing, and truth is but a distant memory. They think religion is a way to make a fast buck. (1 Tim 6:2).

Bottom line - The lust for money just brings trouble and nothing but trouble! Whereas a devout life does bring wealth, covered by the rich simplicity of being yourself before GOD. ❤️
