(Psalm 119:105) “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
SERIES 7: WALKING WITH JESUS - “How do I now live because I belong to Christ?” 5. Delighting in Scripture (God's Word reshapes your thinking and guides your steps).
Following Jesus means learning to love the Word of God—not simply reading it because we feel we should, but discovering that it speaks into our everyday lives.
The Bible isn't merely a collection of ancient stories, rules and religious teachings. It is God's Word, given to reveal who He is, show us what He has done, and teach us how to live.
Notice the picture in the above Psalm... A lamp doesn't necessarily show you the entire road ahead. It gives you enough light to take the next step. That is often how God leads us.
We may want Him to show us the whole plan—where we will be next year, what will happen tomorrow, how a difficult situation will turn out. Instead, He often gives us His Word and says, in effect, Trust Me with the next step.
The world constantly tells us what matters, what success looks like, what we should desire and where we should find our identity - God's Word tells us something different.
It reminds us that our worth isn't determined by what we own, what we achieve or what other people think of us. It teaches us to forgive rather than retaliate, to serve rather than dominate, to trust rather than worry and to seek God's kingdom rather than simply accumulating more for ourselves.
But Scripture only reshapes our thinking when we allow it to get inside us.
There is a difference between reading the Bible and letting the Bible read us.
We can read a chapter and immediately forget it. Or we can stop and ask:
- “What is God showing me here?”
- “What does this reveal about Him?”
- “Is there something in my thinking that needs to change?”
- “Is there something I need to obey?”
- “Is there a promise I need to trust?”
- “Is there something I need to surrender?”
The psalmist said: "I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.” (Psalm 119:16)
That word delight matters. God doesn't want His Word to become another burden on our religious checklist. He wants us to discover the joy of hearing His voice and knowing Him better.
Some days Scripture will encourage us.
Some days it will challenge us.
Some days it will correct us.
And sometimes it will confront something in us that we would rather leave untouched.
But even then, God's correction is an expression of His love.
When we belong to Jesus, the Bible becomes more than information. It becomes an invitation—to know Him, trust Him, obey Him and walk with Him.
We certainly don't read Scripture merely to become more knowledgeable about Christianity. We read it so that we can become more like Christ.
And the more familiar we become with God's Word, the easier it becomes to recognise what is true when the voices around us become confusing. Jesus said: “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.” (John 8:31)
Delighting in Scripture means making God's Word part of the rhythm of our lives—not because we are trying to earn God's approval, but because we already belong to Him and want to hear what our Father has to say.
Delighting in Scripture means this: I choose to make God's Word part of my daily life, allowing it to reshape my thinking, correct my direction and illuminate the next step of my walk with Jesus.
