Many years ago, I overheard a few girls in the office chatting as they made coffee about how their mothers would berate them whenever they stepped over the line ... I listened in, smiling to myself while I made my own drink, recalling my own life's misdemeanours.

To peals of laughter, a few of them recounted how they'd be sent to their rooms without supper and absolutely NO TV. The laughter soon died, though, when one of the girls recalled how her mother actually slapped her for calling her brother stupid. When she asked her mother why she had been slapped for such an innocuous word, her mother responded firmly, “It’s not for what you said - it’s for what you meant!”

Lord, please help us to know that we live ever before You in thought, word and deed. Amen.
