(John 15:11) “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.”
Part 6: WHAT’S IN IT FOR US? - 30. Joy that lasts (rooted joy outlives circumstances because it rests in Jesus).
There is a kind of happiness that depends entirely on circumstances. One that rises when life goes well and disappears when life falls apart. Most of us experience that kind of happiness.
But Jesus offers something very different! He offers JOY.
Joy is not pretending everything is fine. It isn't forced optimism or denying pain. It is the quiet confidence that, even when life hurts, God is still in control, still loves us, and is still working for our good. Happiness is often based on what is happening around us. Joy is rooted in who is with us.
The early Church understood this well. They experienced imprisonment, persecution, rejection, hunger, and hardship, yet the Apostles repeatedly spoke about rejoicing in the Lord. Their joy wasn't found in comfort but in Christ. Nothing could take Him away from them.
That doesn't mean Christians never grieve. Jesus Himself wept at the tomb of Lazarus. We will all experience sorrow, disappointment, and seasons of suffering. Yet beneath those tears can remain a deeper current of joy—a settled assurance that this life is not the end of the story.
The closer we walk with Jesus, the more our joy becomes anchored in Him rather than in changing circumstances.
Careers may end, health may decline, relationships may change, and possessions may disappear, but Christ remains the same yesterday, today, and forever!
This is why Christian joy is so resilient. It is not built on favourable circumstances but on an unchanging Saviour.
As someone once wisely observed:
"Joy is the flag that flies over the castle of our hearts, announcing that the King is at home."
When Jesus is at the centre of our lives, circumstances may shake us, but they do not have the final word. Our joy rests securely in the Emmanuel who never changes.

Let us pray, "Heavenly Father, I want to drink deep of this well of Joy, Lord. I want to submerge myself in it, wash away all the crusty rubbish that has accumulated around my eyes, heart and soul." Amen!
