(Luke 11:4) “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”

And so we conclude another series. In the next series, we will look at “Recurring Tactics the Tempter Uses Against Us.” I will work to draw on key points adapted from one of my favourite books, C.S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters.

In the meantime, I’d like to pause and reply to a question: 'What does it mean in the Lord’s prayer, where it says, “lead us not into temptation? Why would God want to tempt us?”'

As I see it, this is not about God wanting to tempt us. This is rather a petition asking God to protect us from situations or spiritual tests that would lead us to sin and overwhelm our faith. It doesn’t mean God is blamed for tempting people (Scripture confirms that God does not tempt anyone (James 1:13).

Rather, the prayer asks: That God would keep us from being placed in occasions of temptation or overwhelming trial; (1 Corinthians 10:13) — God provides a way out, so temptation won’t be overwhelming.

That He would not permit trials beyond what we can bear without His help; (1 Corinthians 10:13) — “No temptation… beyond what you can bear. But God is faithful… will also provide the way out.”

That He would give the grace and strength to resist and remain faithful when tested. (Hebrews 4:15) — We may approach God’s throne of grace to receive mercy and find help in times of need.

In short: “Lord, do not allow me to be led into circumstances where I will fall; preserve me and give me the help I need.”

Let us pray, "Heavenly Father, I believe that Your Love, Mercy and Grace prove this transliteration. If necessary, please confirm the truth of this in people's lives." Amen!
