(1 John 5:13) “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.”
Part 6: WHAT’S IN IT FOR US? - 35. Assurance (confidence in Christ replaces uncertainty about your standing before God).
One of the enemy's favourite weapons is uncertainty.
- Have I done enough?
- Does God still love me after what I've done?
- What if my faith isn't strong enough?
Many sincere Christians quietly wrestle with questions like these. They love Jesus, yet they constantly wonder whether they truly belong to Him, and instead of enjoying the peace of being God's children, they live as though they are forever trying to earn His acceptance.
The Gospel tells us something entirely different.
Our assurance is not built upon how perfectly we perform, but upon what Christ has already accomplished. Jesus didn't merely make salvation possible—He secured it. On the cross He declared, "It is finished." The debt of sin was paid in full, and everyone who places their trust in Him is welcomed into God's family by grace.
This doesn't encourage careless living. Quite the opposite. The more certain we become of God's love, the more we desire to love and obey Him. Obedience ceases to be an attempt to earn His favour and becomes instead a grateful response to the favour we have already received.
There will still be days when we fail. We all stumble. We all need God's forgiveness. But our confidence rests in the faithfulness of Christ, not in the perfection of our own performance. The Father who adopted us does not abandon His children every time they fall. Instead, He lovingly restores, disciplines, strengthens and continues the good work He has begun in them. (Philippians 1:6)
As we walk with Jesus, assurance grows. We begin to recognise His hand in our lives, His Spirit at work within us, and His faithfulness through every season. Doubts gradually give way to confidence—not confidence in ourselves, but confidence in our Saviour - we begin to live by Faith (in Him and what He can do)!
The Christian does not live hoping that God might one day accept them. We live rejoicing because, through Christ, we have already been accepted.
(Great quote) Assurance is not confidence in your ability to hold on to Christ; it is confidence that Christ will never let go of you.
