(Matthew 23:1–12 (and especially vv. 25–28) Jesus exposes religious hypocrisy: outward humility or righteousness that hides inner pride.
Part 4: RECURRING TACTICS THE TEMPTER USES — 3. False humility (disguising pride as humility to undermine growth)
Another tactic of the tempter is to convince us to hide behind false humility, while we pretend lowliness, while secretly protecting the self.
False humility states, “I’m nothing,” but clings to moral superiority, subtle self‑justification, or attention‑seeking under the guise of meekness. It manages to turn confession into performance, repentance into reputation management, and dependence into a quiet tally of virtue.
The remedy is the same medicine that we find in the Gospel of Christ: expose the motive, confess honestly, and practice vulnerable obedience. Teach the difference between true humility — dependence on Christ that leads to service and repentance (Phil. 2:3–8; James 4:6) — and counterfeit humility that hides pride.
Ask yourself, “Am I seeking affirmation—or God?” Then choose the hard, humble step Jesus calls for: serve, confess, and stay under the pruning shears rather than using ‘beautifully prepared humble words’ to avoid them.

Let us pray, "Heavenly Father, All I see when I read this is fear ... fear of not being good enough, fear of not being accepted, fear of being left behind... help me, Lord, to accept that ONLY by following You can I ever get true peace.” Amen!
