(James 1:5) "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways."

This series explores how God speaks to us. Part 19: Wisdom (Discernment) — knowing how to apply God’s truth in complex, everyday decisions.

What is Wisdom (Discernment) in practical terms?

- The skill of spotting key differences in people, choices, and situations, then choosing the wisest, most ethical action.

- Noticing what matters in a situation and prayerfully picking the best, most Christian [moral] course.

What it looks like

- Slowing down to gather facts before deciding.

- Testing options against clear values or principles (e.g., Scripture, conscience, organisational mission).

- Asking focused questions: What are the motives? Who benefits or is harmed? What are the likely consequences?

- Seeking input from trusted, experienced people.

- Noticing emotional influences (fear, pride, haste) and separating them from clear reasons.

- Choosing small experiments or incremental steps when outcomes are uncertain.

- Willingness to revise a decision when new evidence or correction appears.

Concrete examples:

Sensing that a colleague’s praise has an ulterior motive, then verifying before trusting them.

- Recognising a too-good-to-be-true offer, researching details, and declining if red flags persist.

- Distinguishing constructive criticism from personal attack and responding productively.

- Choosing when to speak up about wrongdoing versus when to gather more information first.

- Prioritising requests based on urgency, impact, and alignment with goals.

Life without wisdom [discernment] is aimless, short-sighted, and full of unnecessary pain. Life with wisdom (discernment) is purposeful, clear-sighted, and marked by right choices that bless you and others.

Let’s pray, “Heavenly Father, You promise Wisdom to those who ask. I ask now—give me clear, humble wisdom for the decisions and trials before me. Keep my heart soft and teachable, so I receive Your guidance. Help me rejoice in Your true exaltation and be content and humble in every season. Keep pride from my heart and grant me the perspective that honours You rather than myself. Fill me with Your Spirit, steady my steps, and let Your wise presence shape my thoughts and actions." Amen!
