(Luke 10:30) “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he encountered robbers, who stripped him of his clothes [and belongings], beat him, and went their way [unconcerned], leaving him half dead. Now by coincidence a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite also came down to the place and saw him, and passed by on the other side [of the road]. But a Samaritan (foreigner), who was traveling, came upon him; and when he saw him, he was deeply moved with compassion [for him], and went to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them [to sooth and disinfect the injuries]; and he put him on his own pack-animal, and brought him to an inn and took care of him. On the next day he took out two denarii (two days’ wages) and gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I return.’”
We’re becoming so self-obsessed that the temptation is to always ‘walk away and leave it to the professionals!’ Or, “It’s not my ministry,” or (worse) “walk away shouting, how come no one is doing anything …?”
Sometimes, helping others doesn’t need anything more than a hand or a coffee or even a listening ear or a gentle word. Or maybe some of our precious ‘time’ …?
If you’ve gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if his love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart, if you care — then do me a favour: Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends. Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand. (Philippians 2:4).

Let us pray, "Lord, as the Samaritan showed compassion to the wounded man, help me to see the needs of those around me. Open my heart to empathy and guide me to act with love and kindness. Please grant me the wisdom to know how best to help, whether through words of encouragement or practical assistance, and may I always be ready to be a neighbour to those in need. Amen! ![]()
