“Our father, who is in Heaven…”

“Our father, who is in heaven…”

Yes?

Huh? You startled me! Don’t interrupt me.  I’m praying!

But you called me.

Called you? I didn’t just call you, I’m praying – “Our Father which art in Heaven …”

There! You did it again!

Did what?

Called me.  You said Our Father which art in Heaven.  Well, here I am, why did you call?

But… I didn’t mean anything by it.  I was … you know, just saying my prayer for the day, kind of like getting a duty done.

Oh OK – good. Go right on.

“Hallowed by Your name…”

I can see you’re struggling with the word ‘Hallowed’. Do you know what that means?

… it means… it means… no I don’t know what it means.  It’s just part of the prayer! …

Would you like me to tell you?

OK, what does it mean?

It means honored, holy, wonderful.

Oh …! “OK, let’s get on then … your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

Do you really mean that?

Errr … sure! Why not?  I guess it would be great if you got control of everything down here like you have up there.

Everything … do I have control of you?

Huh? Me? What do you mean? I do my best to get to church now and again!

That’s not what I asked you. What about those bad habits you have?  Those that you know are in direct conflict with the best for your life?

What do you mean?

How about your 3 T’s: Temper, Thoughts, and Tongue? You really have a problem there!

Hey, just hang on there! I am just as good as most of the people I know – even those in the church.

Oh excuse me.  I thought you were praying for ‘My will’ to be done.  If that’s to happen, then surely it should start with the ones who are praying for it!  Like yourself, for example …?

Oh, all right … I guess I do have ‘some’ hang-ups, now that you mention it … and before you start, YES you could probably name some others.

Good. Now we are getting somewhere! If you like then we can work on them together, you and I.  Some tremendous victories can truly be won …

Go on … I am really proud of you.

Yea, rite … whatever … look Lord, I really need to finish up here. This is taking a lot longer than it usually does and I really do need to get a shower and get ready for work OK …? “Give me this day my daily bread …”

You need to cut out the bread – you’re overweight as it is.

Hey – what is this, “criticize me” day?

Praying is a dangerous thing. You could wind up changed, you know!  That is what I am trying to get across to you. You called me – and here I am.  Go on – don’t stop now … keep on praying.  I am interested in the next part of your prayer.

… I’m afraid.

Afraid? Of what?

I know what you’re going to say next …

Try me and see.

“And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.”

Hmmm … what about Anne?

See! I knew it!  I knew you would bring her into this!  Look, you of all people know the lies that she’s told about me, even spread stories about my family. I have lost friends because of her, not to mention what has been done to my reputation.  OK, I know it was wrong of me to swear to get even with her but hey, I’m only human!

But your prayer …? What about you prayer?!

Well I didn’t mean it!

Ahhh … at least your honest there.  But see, it’s not much fun carrying all that bitterness inside is it?  Come on … let go of it. Forgive Anne then I can forgive you.  Then the hate and sin you feel won’t be your problem any more but hers. You will have settled the matter in your heart and before my throne.

… but, Lord I cannot forgive Anne.  Have I got some plans in store for her!  She’ll wish she never messed with me!

You won’t feel any better.  In fact you’ll feel even worse.  Revenge isn’t sweet.  Think of how unhappy you already are!

… but I can change all that.

How?  … I can’t even get her out of my head!

If you truly ‘want’ me to – then I’ll help you.

Come on, let go …

Oh … I guess you’re right.  Alright, alright, (sigh) … I forgive her.  There! I’ve said it! Happy now?

I was tired of always feeling miserable anyway.  Now that I think about it, she’s bound to be awfully miserable…  anyone who goes about doing the things she does to others must be well out of it.

Somehow, someday please show her the right way?

There now! Wonderful! How do you feel?

Hmmm. Well, not bad actually.  Not bad at all.  In fact, I feel pretty good!  You know.  I bet that I won’t have to go to bed uptight tonight for the first time in a long time. Maybe I won’t be so tired from now on because I am not getting enough rest?

Ahem … you’re not quite through with your prayer. Please go on.

Oh! Alright. … “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil!”

Good! Good!  I will do that.

… but just don’t deliberately put yourself in places where you can be tempted.

Huh … I don’t understand?

Sure you do.  You have done it a lot of times. You get caught in a bad situation. You get into trouble and then you come running to me, “… Lord, help me out of this mess, and I promise you I will never do it again.” You remember some of those bargains you tried to make with me, do you not?

Oh … those … yes, sorry … I’m quite ashamed. I really am.

If you truly want some advice then don’t turn on the TV when you know the laundry needs to be done and the house needs to be tidied up. Also, about some of your friends – if you truly can’t influence the conversation towards ‘good and positive’ things, then perhaps you should re-think the value of those friendships.

Oh, come on Lord … give me a break! I said I was sorry … you know everything, so you know I really am.

Yes, go ahead and finish your prayer.

“For Yours is the Kingdom, and the Power, and the Glory, forever and ever.”

Do you know what will bring me Glory? What will really make me happy?

No, but I would really like to know. This morning has been one of the best I’ve ever had!  I now see that I want to keep talking with you. I can see what a real mess I have made out of my life. And I can see how great it would really be if you were always there in my life – just like now.

You just answered my question.

I did?

Yes, The thing that would really bring me Glory is to have people like you truly love me. And I see that happening between us, now that some of those old sinful attitudes are exposed and out of the way … well there’s no telling what we can do together.

Lord, let’s see what we can make of me today, OK?

Yes, lets just see.

Amen

(whisper) … do I have to stop now …?

Naaaa, we can keep on talking while you get dressed an get ready for work if you like!

Yessssss!
