Deliverance from Bondage

That’s it …! I’ve had enough …!   No more …!  This ends TODAY … !!!

Bottom line … a person unable to exercise self-control over their own behavior is a person in bondage.
[FFOZ]  We fall into the bondage of our appetites and find ourselves ruthlessly lorded over by addictive behaviors like chemical abuse (drugs, alcohol, nicotine) or gluttony and sexual immorality.
It is one thing to be burdened.  It’s even worse to be in bondage.  There are many different types of bondages.  Some might find themselves taken into literal bondage like the Jewish communities did during World War II or like the persecuted Christians in Sudan and other troubled areas today.   Others might find themselves in self-made bondages e.g. it’s very easy to give oneself up to financial bondage with things like a high mortgage or other deep debts.

Anyway just saying (or even SHOUTING) ‘enoughs enough’ to a bondage,  just doesn’t work does it?  For example, there are probably gazillions of people tonight [31st December] all over the world who are going to say that they’re going to quit smoking. They’ll admit that the cigarettes are expensive and that they know that it’s bad for their health. They’ll tell everyone they’re quitting and even make a show of tossing their cigarettes into a bin.  But a few hours later, some of them will be digging through the same bin looking for the cigarettes they threw away.  They are in bondage to their addiction.

When we’re in bondage, we all know that we’re not able to liberate ourselves and that we need someone on the outside of whatever we’re into to deliver us from the bondage. That is why people who struggle with addictions find their best success when they turn to counseling, support groups and other systems of accountability.  It takes someone outside of the situation to intervene.

Me, I’ve been there with cigarettes and Jack Daniels – even though I was ‘going to church’!  Although God delivered me from the booze I just couldn’t quit the cigarettes and 5 years into my ‘new – happy-clappy’ born again state I was still as bound … looking back I can see now that what I needed was a ‘reason to quit’ and that God gave me this through my eldest daughter Alex when she was only 5.  As was my habit, before leaving for work I went into her bedroom and kneeling down by the side of her bed told her how much I loved her, told her I’d be home later in the day as I had to go to work and finished by saying a short prayer – all very nice.  Her response on this particular day completely floored me!  “Daddy …”, she said – making a show of holding her nose, “… what is that AWFUL smell”?

THAT was the day, that I seriously made the decision to quit smoking and ‘that’ was the day that I  got ‘serious’ enough to ask the Lord to help me!  I haven’t touched a cigarette for 15 years now – thank God!

On that occasion I learned the hard way that only God is truly able to intervene and release us from the various bondages that shackle us.

Like He tells us in the Bible; through faith in Jesus, our chains can fall away! God promises to deliver us from our burdens and the good news of salvation is that, through faith in the Saviour that He sent to help us [Jesus], those burdens are removed.

If you’re reading this and are thinking … yea rite … then check out some of the ‘testimony’ sites and see for yourself.  Stuff like FGBMFI [http://www.fgbmfi.org.uk/fgbmfi/Testimonylist.asp] etc.  Can so many people really all be deluded?!

Look up guys, His Light is shining on you … He’s pointing to the Way Out – instead of the heavy burden of guilt we can have forgiveness.  Instead of constant pain we can have joy.  Instead of condemnation, we can have vindication.  Instead of the death and judgment we deserve … we can have the gift of eternal life and grace.
