Day 347/365
“When you do something for someone else, don’t call attention to yourself. You’ve seen them in action, I’m sure—‘playactors’ I call them—treating prayer meeting and street corner alike as a stage, acting compassionate as long as someone is watching, playing to the crowds. They get applause, true, but that’s all they get. When you help someone out, don’t think about how it looks. Just do it—quietly and unobtrusively. That is the way your God, who conceived you in love, working behind the scenes, helps you out.” (Mat 6:2-4 MSG)
This reminds me of a time that we were seriously struggling financially and we had to keep a tight rein on our finances in order to get through.
I remember that it was a particularly cold, wet and windy Sunday and we were glad to be out of the weather and in our lovely warm church. Then, as we all knelt down to pray, I noticed the lady in front of me had big holes in her shoes. She must have walked here I thought. She was quite wet through and still shivering with the cold.
No - the Holy Spirit didn’t have to nudge me
No - an Angel didn’t materialise and point her condition out to me
No - my conscience didn’t even convict me …
I simply knew, that I knew, that I knew, that we had to help her, so while she prayed, I slipped some cash into her open purse.
I’d love to tell you that there was a fabulously happy ending - but I can’t as I didn’t know. All I can say is that my wife smiled, hugged me and told me she loved me. That was good enough. ❤️
