“Change your life, not just your clothes. Come back to God, your God. And here’s why: God is kind and merciful. He takes a deep breath, puts up with a lot, This most patient God, extravagant in love, always ready to cancel catastrophe...” (Joel 2:13-14 MSG)
We were ministering at a local prison once when I heard a great story. So this guy wins the lottery and is now so rich that he goes off and buys an Island. He stocks it with every kind of pleasure activity and invites loads of A-listers to a 7-day party!
At the end of the 7 days, as he’s laid in bed, he awakes to the sound of terrible knocking on his front door. BOOM, BOOM, BOOM! This knocking continues for ages until he gets up and opens the door, at which point he sees the devil thunder past him surrounded by a myriad of demons who trash the whole place!
Petrified, the man runs off screaming and finds an old shack right at the end of his island where an old man asks him what’s wrong. After telling him the story the old man tells him that he needs the services of ‘old Nell’ a witch of much power. He subsequently employs this woman who comes and ‘does her stuff,’ charges him a fortune and leaves.
He organised another party and the same thing happens again, the devil breaks in and trashes everything! Once again he runs to the old man who this time tells him he needs the services of a priest. An old priest dutifully comes round with a truck full of holy statues of Jesus, Mary and Joseph and sets up a special ‘holy room’ in the house, takes a large offering and leaves.
He organised yet another party and once again the same thing happens, the devil breaks in and trashes everything! instead of running to the shack though, he sits dejected in the broken remains of the holy room staring at the statue of Jesus. After a long while he says, “Where were you when I needed you?” To his amazement, Jesus replies, “I was here all the time, but you never asked me to help.”
For over a month, he sat and spoke with Jesus, getting to know him until one day, BOOM BOOM BOOM the dreaded knocking began. As the guy slowly rose to answer the door, Jesus gently pushed him back down. “I’ll go,” he said.
When the devil saw Jesus, he said “sorry, wrong house,” and ran away! ❤️
